Celebrex belongs to the family of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or COX-2 inhibitors; NSAIDs for short and is best used in long term treatment of unbearable pain related to various forms of arthritis like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The active ingredient in this drug is Celecoxib It is also used to treat women who suffer painful menstrual monthly periods and a condition called ankylosing spondylitis. Though this medication helps to reduce the symptoms of the above mentioned condition it is not a cure for arthritis nor does it inhibit the development of any of the arthritic forms.

Prostaglandins are the chemicals that can be attributed to creating the sensation of pain and inflammation and Celebrex blocks the enzyme that produces the prostaglandins. The drugs works by inhibiting the enzyme called cyclooxygenase or the COX-2 that is responsible for pain and inflammation in the body. By reducing the amount of prostaglandins in the body the pain and inflammation are also proportionately reduced.

It is also approved to treat juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children who are two years old. NSAIDs have also been found to help lower the incidence of polyps in the colon of patients who have the hereditary ailment called familial adenomatous polyposis. In people who have this disease the polyps generally becomes malignant and Celebrex is used as an adjunct treatment.

Celebrex is to be taken with a whole glass of water preferably with food so that there are no chances of any stomach upsets. It is available in various strengths and generally the lowest effective strength must be used. While a patient is taking Celebrex he has to ensure that he does not lie down for at least thirty minutes after having taken the medication.
This is one medication that is more effective than other anti-inflammatory drugs in that Celebrex does not have the side effects that are generally associated with anti-inflammatory medications. The patient will find that he begins to get relief from pain within two weeks of having started off on Celebrex treatment. If this drug is not being being taken on a regular basis, it would be ideal to take it when the patient starts experiencing the first signs of pain so that the medication is more effective because if the patient waists till the pain is at its worst it may take longer to take effect.
